Jess and her mom Cindi report that Evan's condition continues to improve, in small steps. Much of his medical treatment at the moment is focused on weaning him off the life-support machines he's been relying on in the past days. As his kidneys start to function better, there's less need for dialysis, and soon that may no longer be necessary at all. He's starting to breathe fairly well on his own, and the doctors have introduced trickle feeding to see whether his digestive system will resume functioning after the extensive surgery he's had in this region. Jess is working with Evan on some physical therapy that will be helpful even as he remains sedated. A mood of guarded optimism prevails, but no one is kidding themselves about the challenges that lie ahead.
